William Morrison started the business in Bradford, England; initially as an egg and butter merchant. Later, in 1958, Morrisons opened the first self-service store in Bradford with three checkouts and, also the first store to have prices on its products. Finally, in 1961, the company started to open its first supermarkets, becoming a public limited company listed on the London Stock Exchange in 1967 and, by 2016 the company had 498 superstores across England, Scotland and Wales.
